Export Promotion Strategy
In terms of export promotion, two strategic documents were developed that will guide the Agency in the implementation of the export promotion activities. These documents are the following:
- National export promotion strategy prepared by the World Bank and
- Strategic framework and business model for the promotion of exports developed by USAID IDEAS
The focus of the Strategy is directed towards achieving two main objectives: first, increasing the value of exports generated by Macedonian companies by 30% over the next three years and second, improving and strengthening the institutional framework of Invest Macedonia as a central governmental institution with dual function in both investments and export promotion.
The development process of the strategy is based on analysis of the current export situation compared to the goals set and is dedicated to thorough research of the competitiveness on a company level and industry level. All the factors that influence the competitiveness of the companies are being analyzed and new mechanisms and initiatives are set with this strategy in order to mitigate or fully remove the barriers affecting the overall competitiveness. The biggest focus is set on maximizing the strengths of the Macedonian companies and industries and minimizing the weaknesses when approaching and developing their presence on the foreign markets.
The Export promotion strategy is not only focused on simple qualitative increase in the value of the exports but is also widely dedicated to changing the export structure through export of products with higher added value. Four target sectors are being identified as having the greatest potential in fulfilling the objectives of the strategy and these are:
- Textile Industry (Apparel)
- Agribusiness and Food Processing
- Industry Metals and Precision Mechanics including Automotive Components
- Information and Communications Technology
Additional sectors are being identified that should also contribute towards the diversification of the export structure. From the production site this include pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceutical products, chemicals, medical devices, electronics, plastic and plastic products etc. On the services side the following sectors are being identified: business process outsourcing, tourism, call centers, financial services and logistics and distribution.
